I am Oregon Agriculture!

Did you know that 98% of farms in Oregon are family owned an operated??  Well the Agri-Business Concil of Oregon is spreading the word that families in Oregon truly can say with pride, “I am Oregon Agriculture!”  The Agri-Business Council of Oregon is an organization that works to help reduce the gap between our farming families and our more urban neighbors.  I wanted to show you two new videos they have put out to help in accomplishing their goals in Oregon.

The first campaign is called “I am Oregon Agriculture”  This video is going to be airing on KATU starting today!  It features many farming families and lots of facts about Oregon agriculture.

This next video was actually shot completely on our farm, although we can’t claim any of the very cute kiddos in the video, it’s just a small bit of information that students get to take away when participating in Adopt a Farmer (the second great program Agribusiness Council of Oregon sponsors!)

I encourage you to hit up their website http://www.OregonFresh.net and see what is going on.  They have a great blog on there featuring many family farmers, recipes, and tips on where to find all this delicious Oregon grown food!

Farmer/Wedding Planner

As most of you who have been following my blog for awhile know, I was engaged to the man of my dreams last year.  And since then we have been planning a wedding.  And as the saying goes, smaller the town…bigger the wedding!  So our intimate gathering of over 500 people will be this Saturday…I can hardly believe it!

I have to admit it hasn’t been easy having my dad take a step back in management, challenging me to step up in my career while at the same time knowing that the wedding day was going to come much faster than I realized.  So I took it one day at a time, asked my dad to be patient when I couldn’t work on a Saturday because I had appointments to try on wedding dresses, get my hair trial done, makeup trial done, pick up the wedding dress…the list goes on and on for prep work! And now we are finally here…six days away!  But where dad took a step back from management, he very quickly took on a large role with my mom of making sure the farm was just right for the big day.  And it is looking incredible thanks to all of their very hard work!!!

It’s been interesting keeping the farm running smooth while planning for one day of our lives…one big day…but still ONE DAY!  My brain has been scattered with details of irrigation timing mixed with linen choices, and dealing with a broken down tractor while at the same time on the phone with our caterer, or wiping grease off my hands on my way to pick up my wedding dress…let’s just say that I’m glad this juxtapose of life only happens once! And I’m glad I have some great workers by my side to keep me straightened out most of the time!

So all that being said, things are going to continue to be a bit wild over at Kirsch Family Farms World Headquarters for a few more days.  And if you call to ask me about wheat, I may think it’s for our center pieces, not for loading on a barge.  Or if you ask about how the rust is looking (fungus that grows in our fields) I may just assume that you’re talking about our rustic country theme.  Bear with us…the big day is just about here and it’s going to be incredible!

Dear Mom…

Dear Mom,

Just wanted to say Happy Mother’s Day! And give a big THANK YOU for all that you do! Even though your title has been upgraded in the past couple of years to “grandma” and “mimi”, don’t think that you’re still not my mom, I’m sorry but you never get to lose that title with your kiddos!

I wanted to say thank you for all that you’ve done for me. Since I was a little one you were always there to teach me and guide me into who I am today. And rest assured, I got caught for every bad thing I did, so there are no skeletons in this closet. I cannot however speak for any of my siblings on that subject (haha!) Growing up I could never think of you as anything but my mom, I never believed that you ever were a teacher for instance. But it all makes perfect sense now how much I can look back and see how much you have taught me.

Life has been wild this past year for me. I found the man of my dreams and now we’re getting married! Can you believe it?! We bought a house and some land. And both of these situations all came with their own challenges and new sense of adventure. And you, you were right there all along the way to be the stable one. You have always been such a rock in my life. This new life we’re starting here only a few short miles and a dirt road from my homeplace, I hope it will be that same thing for our kids. A good place to call home.

You don’t need me to tell you you’re incredible mom, because you do so much with humility and love, and you would do all the same things even if people never noticed or never said a word of thank you. But I hear just about every day how awesome you are, so your secret is out mom, sorry to tell you. You’re such an amazing woman who has built a wonderful home that all of us kids love to come back to. You’re a grandma that has shown us all again what a wonderful childhood we had growing up on the farm. I can see it when those little kids pull in the driveway and they can’t wait to run around, ride on tractors, help you bake cookies, or go on a walk to the creek. Thank you for all you have done for me, and all I know you will continue to do for everyone you meet.
