Little Helper

Many times Hoot comes along on farming projects. We had him out in the field with us yesterday to mark out some new field boundaries. He was very helpful as you can imagine.

Hoot didn’t complain a bit though. He’s a great outdoor kid and can you blame him? I mean who needs a sand box when you can play in a 50 acre dirt box?!

   Farm life is so good!

Wheat & Green Beans…More Harvesting!

We have still been busy here at the farm.  Although the small amount of dust settling rain we got this weekend really gave us all a moment to take a deep breath and relax for a bit.  We have been harvesting since the middle of June, so 5 weeks into the process it’s nice to be able to tell everyone to take a day or two off.

Last week we were busy harvesting wheat.  We grow spring wheat for seed, seed that will be planted to make even more wheat and sold to make breads, cereals, noodles, all sorts of products!

We also had our first planting of green beans picked.  The company that we grow for has their own harvest crew.  It allows them to work closely with the cannery  as far as timing of product coming in, and allows us the savings of not having to purchase or rent special equipment just for one crop on our farm.

FullSizeRender(10) FullSizeRenderFullSizeRender(13)They work 24 hours a day, and showed up around 2am in our field to get going.  By the time we took a look at the field they already had a large chunk harvested and before we knew it they were packed up and heading down the road to the next field.

I’m not going to talk yields today, let’s just say this farm has had much better years.  This will be one that I will be glad once it’s over and we can close the books on a rough season.  The good news is that we will be doing it all again next year, hopefully with better news…every year is truly so different!  Still to come this year, the last two crops, radish & hazelnuts!

Green Beans!

I would start by saying that green beans are crop number (blank) on our farm, but it’s harvest and to tell you the truth I don’t even know what day it is let alone where green beans fall amongst the other either crops we are growing this year.  It’s obvious that I’m tired and a little worn out already even though it’s only mid-July.  Harvest came early, but that doesn’t really matter, it’s a go go go time of year for all farmers here in Oregon.  You can tell just how tired because it turns out it’s Tuesday and not Monday (the usual day I post).  Oh well, for your viewing pleasure here is some green bean progress for you all.

IMG_4355The first planting is looking great!  The row are full of small little baby beans filling more and more by the day! IMG_4354 The second planting is coming right along as well, no blooms or beans on the plants yet, but those are sure to come soon.

So I hope everyone has a great Monday, or Tuesday, or whatever the heck day it is.  To us farmers it really doesn’t matter, the sun is shining so we are working, hope my blog readers can forgive me!  I’m not quite as tired as a few years ago.  I remember I walked out of my house to go to work after only a few hours of sleep, looked down and realized not only did I forget to put on shoes, I had two different socks on.  Oh the life of harvest!  Well I guess it’s time to get back out into the field folks.  Until next time…
