The PowerPoint Slide…

The PowerPoint slide doesn’t say, “just go out and spray chemicals to take care of the problem!”

I saw this slide during a presentation from Oregon State University at this years Seed Growers League and just thought it was so interesting because I get so many questions about why we spray “so much”.
So here is a bit of reality about what we are taught, what tools we use, and how yes, we continue to strive to be true stewards of the land.

The Day After Thanksgiving

…and I’m still thankful. Mostly for the dedicated guys we have working at the farm. It’s a balmy 28 degrees here this morning,

And on a day that we always give our guys a break, I asked them to please come in. We have a field of grass that gotten eaten by slugs and disappeared in a matter of days. It’s a small field of 10 acres, but lost 9 of that field to slugs.

The ground has been freezing and thawing for over a week so the soil on the top is really lose and very sticky. Except when the ground is frozen, so we are giving it a try.

So yes today I’m thankful that even while in a slight still food coma these guys are still hard workers and know I wouldn’t ask unless it really had to be done.

Stay warm and hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving!!

Oregon State University Field Day 2013

I took a few photos while at Oregon State University’s Field day a few days ago.  They are always researching new cropping options for farmers here in this area, trying out new chemistry’s, checking disease resistance, etc.  While we don’t grow all of the crops that were covered, it might be something we would look into growing someday, so it’s definitely worth while to go check out what they are up to!!
